Participate in a Study on Healthier Child Care Centers and Homes - Receive $100!

Are you a child care provider located in one of the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Merced, Stanislaus, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, or Santa Cruz? Do you work at a child care center or family child care home that cares for children ages 2 to 5 years? You are invited to participate in a year-long study about healthier child care! All you will need is the ability to access the Internet from a computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone.

You can receive up to $100 for your participation in the study.

To be eligible to participate, your child care center or family child care home must:

  • Have been in operation for more than one year,
  • Provide beverages with at least one meal or one snack per day, and
  • Not be a Head Start or State preschool

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I have to do to participate?

Participation in the project will take about 5 hours of your time. To participate in the project you will need to:

  • Read and sign a consent form.
  • Depending on which group you are assigned to, you may be asked to complete a 30 to 60 minute online training at the start of the project. Others will receive the training at the end of the project.
  • You will be asked to complete up to four surveys: one at the start of the project, one after the training (if you receive it), and then one month and one year later; each survey will take no more than 15 minutes.
  • Agree to receive email, phone, and/or text message support to answer questions you may have from the training.

Do I receive money for participating?

Yes, you will receive up to $100 for participating in this project. You will receive $25 after completing the initial survey (and the training if assigned to the training group), $25 after completing the survey one month later, and $50 after completing the final survey one year later.


How do I participate?

If you are eligible, you will be sent an introductory letter, consent form, and survey about your child care center or family child care home and the beverages you serve.

  • Located in one of the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Merced, Stanislaus, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, or Santa Cruz
  • Child care center or family child care home in operation for at least one year
  • Not a Head Start or State preschool
  • Care for children ages 2 to 5 years old
  • Provide beverages with at least one meal OR one snack per day (that is not brought in by parents)
  • Speak and read English or Spanish
  • Able to access the Internet using a computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone

How do I access the online training?

You will be able to access the online training via the Internet from your computer, laptop, tablet, or smart phone. You will need to install the latest version of your preferred web browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari). The training will be provided to you at no cost. 


What will the training be like?

The online training will take 30 to 60 minutes to complete. It is interactive and includes brief games, activities, videos, and audio recordings throughout. After completing the training, you will receive a certificate of completion that you can print or save. The training will be provided to you at no cost.


What happens if parents provide food for their children?

To participate in this project, you need to regularly provide beverages with at least one meal or one snack per day to the 2- to 5-year-old children in your care (that is not brought in by parents). We understand that on occasion a parent may provide beverages for children, but if all parents provide all beverages for children on a regular basis, you may not qualify to participate in this project. Can I participate in the project if I participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program?
